The Google app has been updated with a number of small features as of late, including Notifications for Doodles and the ability to take screenshots using Assistant. As part of the latest beta build, the Android app now allows users to manually set Search region.
In version 6.11.13 released this morning, there is a new setting under Search called ‘Search region.’ Instead of just a list of languages, users can now manually select country-specific regions for Google Search, like Google.co.uk for the United Kingdom and Google.fr for France.
By default, ‘Current Region’ is selected automatically, though all regions that Google has a specific domain for are also available. Usually, region is set via your IP address, with users being able to change it manually by going to a different URL in a browser.
The company notes that “Google Search is customized for many countries and regions around the world.” As such, results looked up with a different region selected might vary from ones you’re familiar with.
In quick testing, selecting a different region will not alter location-based searches, like ‘coffee shops near me.’ Changing the search region does not appear to disable Google Assistant on the Pixel, which is still governed by language.
Google notes that some quick answers, like cards for sports teams, might not be available in all regions.
