Galaxy S8 reported to get first dibs on Snapdragon 835, LG G6 shipping w/ last year’s Snapdragon 821

During 2016, deciding which flagship smartphone to buy didn’t come down to the specs, but to all the other factors at play. Why? Because just about every flagship last year shipped with the same specs. Between LG G5, Galaxy S7, and HTC 10, it was basically the same across the board. However, if recent reports turn out to be true, things may be a bit different this year.

According to a report out of Forbes, LG’s flagship G6, which just leaked earlier today, will be shipping with 2016’s Snapdragon 821 chipset ─ the same one found in Google’s Pixel. Now, is that a particularly bad thing? In all reality, not really. The Snapdragon 821 is a very capable chipset, but as we enter 2017, it’s soon going to be an outdated one.

Qualcomm’s already-announced Snapdragon 835 chipset promises even more power and faster charging compared to the 821, but it looks like Samsung is going to have first dibs on it for the Galaxy S8.

Forbes’ report claims that Qualcomm/Samsung won’t ship the Snapdragon 835 in large quantities until after the Galaxy S8 ships which will apparently take place in mid-April. That means LG had a choice ─ either push the release of the G6 until after (or around) that of the Galaxy S8, or release it on outdated hardware.

Honestly, I don’t think it’s going to be a big deal that LG is using an older chipset, as long as the company takes the time to optimize the software to keep it super quick on the 821. LG also won’t be able to market the G6 as much on its raw power, but rather on its various features. So far, rumors have placed the G6 with water resistance, a 5.7-inch display, and Google Assistant out of the box.
