Google celebrates the Chinese New Year with new Doodle, Arts & Culture project

Today marks the 2017 Chinese New Year also know as the Lunar New Year. This holiday — known in mainland China as the Spring Festival — marks the end of winter and the start of spring. Plus, 2017 is the Year of the Rooster!

Google Arts and Culture has partnered with 12 museums between Washington D.C. and Beijing and has created an online exhibit so that everyone can learn more about the holiday and join in on the festivities. You can also learn more about the Chinese zodiac signs, how to traditionally give and receive a red envelope, and the history of the holiday’s art and red decorations that are hung around people’s homes.

The date of the New Year is based on a lunisolar Chinese calendar. The exact date for the Lunar New Year is whichever day the second new moon rises after the winter solstice, which means that the Lunar New Year can take place anywhere between January 21 and February 20. The tradition also celebrates one of the Chinese zodiac signs each year with 2017 being the Year of the Rooster.

You can learn even more about the Lunar New Year by heading on over to Google’s Arts and Culture website or by watching the video below.
