Google Duo 24 adds account deletion, continues work on Google account linking [APK Teardown]

As we’ve found, Google’s consumer video/audio messaging service is working on features like Google account linking and screen sharing. The latest version of the app is now rolling out with progress on those features underway, as well as the ability to delete your Duo account in settings.

About APK Teardowns: In this ‘APK teardown,’ we’ve decompiled the latest version of an application that was uploaded to the Play Store. When an app (or an APK, to be specific, in the case of Android apps) is decompiled, we’re able to see various lines of code within that hint at possible future features. Keep in mind that Google may or may not ever ship these features, and our interpretation of what they are may be imperfect. With that in mind, read on.

Delete Duo account

Duo 24 adds the ability to quickly delete your existing account on the video/voice messaging service. At the bottom of the Settings menu is a new option to “Delete Duo account.” Tapping it brings up a confirmation screen that notes how “You won’t be able to make or receive calls on Duo.”

Update: As suggested by some, the “Delete your Duo account” is likely a rebrand of the existing “Unregister phone number.” Various strings in version 24 have all been updated to reflect the more explicit nature of deletion. Regardless, it is clearer to users.

<string name=”pref_delete_account_header”>Delete Duo account</string>

<string name=”pref_delete_account_progress_title”>Deleting</string>

<string name=”pref_delete_account_text”>”You won’t be able to make or receive calls on Duo.”</string>

<string name=”pref_delete_account_text_no”>CANCEL</string>

<string name=”pref_delete_account_text_yes”>DELETE</string>

<string name=”pref_delete_account_title”>Delete your Duo account?</string>

<string name=”delete_account_error_try_again”>Unable to send the request to delete Duo account. Please check the connection and try again.</string>

Google account linking

Back in version 22 of Duo, we noted how Google account linking would allow users to be reached via their email address. Work on that feature is underway, with the service prepping a new screen to walk users through that process. It features a new graphic, while the sign-in page has been slightly tweaked since we last spotted it:
