HTC One M8

See All Stories

The HTC One (M8) is powered by a quad-core 2.3GHz Snapdragon 801 processor, Adreno 330 GPU, 2GB of RAM, and a 2,600mAh battery. It also features a 5-inch Super LCD3 display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 (441 PPI). You’ll also find a Micro SD card slot that allows the storage to be expanded up to 128GB.

The One M8 features the same 4-megapixel Ultra Pixel camera as its predecessor, but removes optical image stabilization. HTC has also included a second 2-megapixel sensor and dual-LED flash to work alongside the 4-megapixel shooter in what it’s calling a Duo Camera configuration. This second 2-megapixel sensor captures depth information that can be used in combination with various effects in HTC’s camera app.

The One M8 launched with Android 4.4.2 KitKat running HTC’s Sense 6.0 overlay and BlinkFeed 2.0. It has since been updated to Android 6.0 Marshmallow running Sense 7.0.

Sketchy report mentions Galaxy Note 7 edge could sport a dual camera setup

note-5-top-feat-00_01_10_16-still156Among the common trends that seem to be picking up in mobile photography, we can certainly include the adoption of dual cameras: brands like LG and Huawei — with the G5 and P9 respectively — have in fact already brought dual-camera equipped, high-end terminals to the mainstream market.

Now, following numerous reports of Apple allegedly looking forward to entering the game, Samsung seems willing to join the part as well (via Pocket-Lint)…

Android Marshmallow coming soon to several carrier HTC One M9 and M8 variants, including Sprint, T-Mobile, Rogers, more

htc-one-m9_camera

HTC’s product management chief, Mo Versi has confirmed on Twitter that several North American carrier-locked variants of the HTC One M9 and One M8 will be getting Android Marshmallow over the coming weeks.

Beginning this coming Monday, January 18th, the Marshmallow OS update will be pushed to Sasktel, Rogers, Wind and Videotron HTC One M9 owners in Canada.

As you’d expect, following that tweet, many HTC One owners with different carrier-locked versions were keen to known an ETA for their Marshmallow update. In response to those, Mo Versi stated that the HTC One M8 on Sprint will get the new software from the middle of next week, while the T-Mobile variant is on schedule for a January 25 release.

Sadly there’s no specific news for AT&T or Verizon users, except to say that HTC needs a “few more weeks” before the update is ready for the HTC One M9 on AT&T.

Android Marshmallow update for unlocked HTC One M8 rolling out today

htc-one-m8-lead

If you’re an HTC One M8 owner, you’ll be glad to know that the Android Marshmallow update is rolling out from today to unlocked devices. Mo Versi, the company’s VP of Product Management confirmed the rollout on his personal Twitter handle yesterday afternoon.

[tweet https://twitter.com/moversi/status/672105656489349120 align=’center’]

Sadly, if you’re using a carrier-locked version, or if you’re in a market outside the Americas, you’ll have to wait a little longer. Those devices almost always take more time to be updated as carrier approval and testing needs to be done before pushing the software out to users:

[tweet https://twitter.com/urbanstrata/status/672114884520226816 align=’center’]

It’s impressive that HTC has managed to start rolling out Marshmallow updates so soon after the software became officially available. Even the virtually stock Motorola handsets are yet to receive the official update, although they are currently subject to software soak testing for some users.

HTC, of course, was the first Android OEM to release a non-Nexus smartphone running Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box. The One A9 was announced a few weeks ago and makes full use of Google’s latest mobile operating system, including the baked-in fingerprint sensor support and Android Pay, Doze mode and more. No other manufacturer has managed to do that yet.

Since the One A9 was announced we’ve seen several new handsets including the likes of Samsung’s new A-series, Huawei’s Mate 8 and the Oppo R7s among many others, all of which have (or will) hit the market running a version of Android Lollipop. HTC, clearly then, is ahead of the curve with software updates and that’s something to be applauded.

HTC rolling out Android 6.0 Marshmallow to the unlocked HTC One (M8) ‘within 24 hours’

HTC-One-m8

Let’s just say that HTC doesn’t have the best track record when it comes to software updates, but here’s a glimmer of hope: According to HTC’s Mo Versi (the same guy that announces pretty much all of HTC’s smartphone software updates), the unlocked HTC One (M8) should be getting Android 6.0 Marshmallow very soon.

Specifically, Mo says “testing has been complete,” for the new software and that “the update for Marshmallow will be sent out within 24 hours.”

You might be surprised that the M9 didn’t get the update first, and we’re in the same boat (and so is pretty much everyone else on Twitter). Mo did clarify, however, that the update should be coming to the M9 soon. “Will advise once testing is complete,” he says in reply to one user.

Stagefright vulnerability fixes for HTC One M9 and M8 on AT&T now rolling out

Google may have promised to keep its Nexus devices updated once a month, and was one of the first to push fixes for the vulnerability in Stagefright, but that doesn’t mean owners of other phones will see such prompt updates. Today, weeks since Nexus devices were patched, AT&T’s HTC One M9 and M8 are receiving over-the-air updates to keep you safe when sending MMS messages.

You can find information about both the HTC One M9 update and that for the HTC One M8 over at AT&T’s website. The OTA for the M9 comes in at just 55.53 MB, while the M8 update is 28 MB. These are pretty tiny numbers for OTA updates, so you shouldn’t expect much more from this update than the patch for Stagefright. It goes without saying that it’s still important to update though.

Head over to the Settings app and mash that refresh button, or just wait until your device tells you that you’re ready to go.

HTC is now effectively worthless following stock dive

htc-one-m9_camera

HTC‘s stock has taken such a dive in recent months that, this morning, the company’s market value is now less than the cash it has on hand. In its most recent earnings, the Taiwanese manufacturer stated that it had NT$47.2 billion (New Taiwanese Dollar) cash. Today, its market price dropped to NT$47 billion, effectively making the company worthless to shareholders.

Originally reported by Bloomberg, this is a pretty damning turn of events for HTC. One analyst from Sinopac Financial Holdings stated that “HTC’s cash is the only asset of value to shareholders.” So its other assets like buildings and factories are worth nothing. What’s more, investors clearly aren’t confident in the future of the company either. A feeling perhaps based on this year’s flagship model, the HTC One M9, being just a modest upgrade to last year’s all-metal smartphone. And also the fact that now, lesser-known Chinese manufacturers are on the rise and capable of producing competitive smartphones at much lower prices.

HTC’s approach to dealing with this almost-collapse is to cut costs by focussing on the high end of the market where margins are higher. It’s a bold move, and one that might backfire for the company. Especially if the next few flagship devices continue to lose out heavily to the likes of Apple’s iPhone and Samsung’s Galaxy series. In my mind, the solution would be to ensure it has fewer items in its inventory and ensure supply doesn’t massively outweigh demand like it does currently.

How this turns out for HTC isn’t something easily predicted, but right now, it’s not looking so good for the company that once churned out hits like the popular Evo handset in 2010.

Best Buy dropping the price of the HTC One M8 to $299 for a one-day sale

htc_one_m8_1

Whereas the HTC One M9 may have seen its image damaged by reports of Snapdragon 810 heating issues (whether or not they’re accurate is up to you to decide), the One M8 is a great phone featuring a 5-inch full HD display, Android Lollipop, a Snapdragon 801 processor, and a bunch more. What’s more, you can get it for only $299 on AT&T, Sprint, or Verizon from Best Buy right now…

The One M8 is just a good compromise — not too dissimilar from the One M7, but without the rampant reports of performance issues hanging over the M8. If I were in the market for a new phone, especially at a carrier-unsubsidized price, I know I’d be taking a hard look at this sale. It’s available today while supplies last.

HTC launches the One M8s, an M8 with toned-down specs and a cheaper price tag

Site default logo image

M8_PerLeft_GunMetal_27_01_2014_GLBL_678x452

HTC has today launched the M8s, a cheaper version of last year’s M8 flagship with specs that are just a bit less like a flagship. Taking a look at the above image, you might notice that the device isn’t like the cheaper “C” version of the iPhone 5—rather, the design of HTC’s new handset is almost exactly the same in terms of outer appearance. On the inside, though, there are definitely some compromises that will clearly set this handset apart from HTC’s current One M9 flagship.

HTC reveals One M9 to be available in the US from April 10, more details

HTC One M9 4G with 32GB Memory Cell Phone Gray HTC ONE M9 GREY - Best Buy 2015-03-01 08-42-43

HTC has announced today during its Uh Oh protection plan livestream that the HTC One M9 will be available at retail from early April in the United States. The answer came in reference to when the Uh Oh plan itself will be launching, which will be the same day that the HTC One M9 hits stores. Notably, this date will likely vary by carrier, but the first availability of the device will be April 10th.

The company also answered several other questions via viewers on Twitter:

The Uh Oh protection plan was “born out of a conference room in the US offices,” and HTC Americas president Jason Mackenzie says that it will indeed be limited to the United States for the time being. The Uh Oh plan will likely make it to other countries with time, however, after the company makes sure to “get it right.”

When asked about the Lollipop update for the HTC One M8 and M7, Mackenzie said that the update is “in certification” now, and that approval should be happening sometime around the end of this month or the beginning of next month.

Finally, HTC confirmed today, unsurprisingly, that there will not be a Google Play Edition for the HTC One M9. When asked about a Windows Phone version, Mackenzie left things open ended saying to “stay tuned.”

Don’t worry if you break your new HTC One M9 or want to switch carriers – HTC has you covered

Site default logo image

htc-m9

If you’ve ever said “Uh-oh” as your smartphone fell to the ground, HTC knows how you feel. It is today announcing a free, one-year protection plan for the One M9 smartphone, offering a free replacement if you crack the screen or drop it in water. The company will also replace the phone if you want to switch carriers.

HTC UH OH Protection provides consumers who damage their new HTC One M9 with an untimely fall onto the pavement or into a toilet with a free phone replacement within 12 months of purchase. Consumers who don’t take advantage of UH OH Protection within the first 12 months will receive $100 towards the purchase of a future HTC One.

The UH-OH program is an extension of the HTC Advantage cover offered on the M8, which was limited to screen damage and only lasted for six months …
