US Carriers want to put ads on your Android lockscreen

By Ben Schoon

Advertising is a common way for any company to make money nowadays, but there are times it can feel invasive and over the top.  It seems that, soon, more Android phones will be leaning into that territory.

A report this week revealed that a company called "Glance" is talking with US wireless carriers about bringing its ad-tech to the United States. The problem? Those ads appear all over your phone's lockscreen!

Glance calls its special dynamic lockscreen "delightful," but at the end of the day it's just another avenue for advertising.  Android phones equipped with the technology can show videos, polls, and even games all in an effort to show you more ads and grab your interest. Swipe up to learn more!

Glance already has partnerships internationally with brands such as Motorola, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, and even Samsung. Google doesn't use the tech, but they did invest in the company

On its website, Glance even makes a passing joke about Apple "reinventing" the iOS 16 lockscreen

We still don't know what lockscreen ads will look like if Glance and its US carrier partners get their way, but we don't have long to wait until we find out...

According to this report, Glance will have "several" smartphone models in the US with its lockscreen ads within just the next couple of months
