Samsung is reportedly sticking with a power button fingerprint sensor for the Z Fold 4

By Andrew Romero & Ben Schoon

We're still quite a ways away from seeing the launch of the Galaxy Z Fold 4, but that doesn't mean we don't know any information yet.

Something we've learned quite recently is a report that Samsung will not be using an under-display fingerprint sensor/sensors in the Galaxy Z Fold 4.

Samsung apparently "considered" going that route but ultimately chose not to pursue it and instead is sticking with a fingerprint sensor in the power button.

This allows for more natural fingerprint recognition. There was a patent in place from Samsung that had to do with two fingerprint sensors attached to one another, possibly specifically for the Fold series. For now, it looks like that plan is shot.

9to5Google's take:

While fingerprint sensors hidden in the display are standard nowadays for flagship devices, this a good thing for Samsung to do.

A side-mounted fingerprint sensor makes all too much sense for these form factors. On the Galaxy Z Fold 4, it allows the device to be unlocked both when closed and opened up. Having multiple sensors in place would be the only option, which doesn't make as much sense.
