In a change to the usual release cadence, Google said yesterday that the next Pixel Watch update is not coming until March 2025.
After skipping October, Google on Tuesday released the November 2024 update for all three Pixel Watch generations. The Pixel Watch 3 got its first post-launch update, while the Wear OS 5 rollout resumed for the Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 resumed.
As part of that, Google said the “next update [is] planned for March 2025.”
For the most part, the Pixel Watch has received an update every single month, though there have been short gaps due to big upgrades (Wear OS 3 -> 4), thus matching Pixel phones.
This upcoming 3-month gap is a departure for the Pixel Watch, though it isn’t the biggest impact on the end user experience. Google’s monthly Pixel Watch updates usually just bump the security patch level. It’s rare that new features are introduced via the system OTA, with most making their way from the Play Store.
It could be a bid to conserve engineering resources and allow for bigger, more polished updates on a quarterly basis.
Meanwhile, the Q1 2025 Pixel Watch update lines up with a March Feature Drop. The Wear OS 5 update will have to serve as this year’s big update, though the December Pixel Drop will undoubtedly bring app-level updates.
