Your Motorola Razr+ can now unlock BMW vehicles via NFC

Digital keys are slowly replacing physical ones as more manufacturers add compatibility, but that’s somewhat of a process. Motorola has announced that BMW has added Digital Key access for two of its devices, including the Razr+.

It’s common for digital key compatibility to come to certain devices through familiar wallet apps, like Samsung Wallet and Google Wallet. Sometimes, vehicle manufacturers will also add compatibility with proprietary apps. Both work well, and it how it’s implemented comes down to the preference of the manufacturer.

Motorola has announced that, in partnership with BMW, Digital Key will now be available for two devices: the Motorola Razr 50 Ultra (Razr+) and Edge 50 Ultra. Both devices will be able to use NFC to unlock vehicles. The key can also be shared with friends and family to allow access to the car, making it that much more useful than a physical key. BMW Digital Key is a proprietary app, separate from Google Wallet or Samsung Wallet.

While the Motorola Razr+ gets access to BMW Digital Key, the Edge 50 Ultra will actually be compatible with the more capable version of Digital Key Plus. The advanced version utilizes UWB to open up different functions, like auto-lock and unlock in proximity to the vehicle. It also means the phone can be used to set contigencies, like requiring the phone to be present for a physical key to be used.
