Pixel Watch adds app icons to Wear OS Tiles

A tweak that coincides with the Wear OS 5.1 update briefly introduces app icons to Tiles on the Pixel Watch.

When swiping left/right through Tiles, you’ll notice that app icons now briefly appear at the top of the screen. This circular overlay appears for just a second before disappearing and giving you an interrupted view of the Tile (though only data rings appear that high up in Tiles).

It’s a minor change and mostly a nice touch, though what app is responsible for a Tile is always pretty apparent.

This little design element dates back to the Wear OS 3 launch in 2021. It has appeared in Google announcements and Android developer documentation since then. In the past few months, Google quietly enabled this on the Pixel Watch.

After I reset my Pixel Watch 3 in December/January (Wear OS 5/Android 14), it appeared. Existing watches are now seeing it after updating to Wear OS 5.1, though it’s not precisely tied to the Android 15 update.
