Samsung says that, amid huge success for its Galaxy Z Fold 8 series, more Galaxy Z Flip owners are switching to the Fold this year – and it’s pretty easy to see why.
In a note shared with 9to5Google and other members of the media, Samsung details the pre-order success of its Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Flip 8 devices, with the highest pre-orders ever for a Galaxy Z launch. Fold 8 and Fold 8 Ultra, Samsung says, have seen pre-orders 30% higher than Fold 7, which was already a record-breaking release for Samsung’s foldable lineup.
Breaking that number down, Samsung says that roughly half of all pre-orders across carriers and retail were for the wide Galaxy Z Fold 8. Demand was so high, in fact, that the “Lavender” color is currently sold out on Samsung.com – or so the company says, we were able to add it to cart start checkout with an August delivery date for even the 256GB model. Apparently, around 25% of those who pre-ordered a Fold or Flip this year also picked up a Galaxy Watch to go with it. “Graphite” was boringly the most popular color choice for the Fold 8 series this year, while the trio of green colors – “Green Shadow” (Fold 8 Ultra), “Pistachio” (Fold 8), and “Mint” (Flip 8) – were popular among younger buyers.

The most interesting stat by far, though, is around existing Galaxy Z Flip owners moving to the Galaxy Z Fold 8.
Samsung didn’t break down the numbers, but apparently there were 3x as many Galaxy Z Flip owners upgrading to a Galaxy Z Fold device this year compared to prior generations. It seems likely this is due to Fold 8’s new form factor, which offers a much more compact shape for a phone without the limitations of the Flip’s design, while opening up into a much larger and more useful canvas.
Looking forward, Samsung says that it expects the global foldable market to “grow more than 20% year-over-year and to more than double by 2028.”
Pre-orders for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Samsung’s other new foldables end tomorrow, August 6, with full availability starting on August 7. Our Fold 8 and Fold 8 Ultra reviews are both live.
