Samsung is working on a competitor for Google Glass that will be announced in September during IFA in Berlin, according to Business Korea. Aptly referred to as “Gear Glass,” the unannounced wearable is expected to be revealed alongside the Galaxy Note 4 and it’s rumored to run the Tizen operating system used by the Samsung Gear 2.
Historically, Samsung has used IFA as a platform to announce its Galaxy Note devices, however this would be the first official mention of something that would compete directly with Google Glass.
“We rolled out the smartwatch first, and have secured a considerable amount of smart glass-related technology and patents,” a Samsung associate told Business Korea. “Following the roll out of our smart watch Galaxy Gear in September last year, we are slated to introduce our smart glass Gear Glass this September.”
Samsung’s new wearable will feature an earpiece with a display that will allow users to listen to music while viewing onscreen content. While we’ve seen our share of Glass competitors, a device from a major player like Samsung might be able to gain some momentum against Mountain View’s popular wearable.
