Android TV launches in Italy with digital decoder from TIMvision

Several Android TV sets and boxes, including one from Xiaomi, were announced at Google I/O back in May. The smart TV operating system is now coming to Italy with an Android TV decoder made by TIMvision, an Internet video on demand service.

The Android TV decoder actually looks like a black, shrunken down Google Home speaker. There is even a ring of lights around the base of the device that signals when it is on.

In addition to running Android TV, it has full Google Cast features and support for 4K content and output. It is powered by a quad-core Marvell ARM CPU. Besides having access to the full Play Store, there is a redesigned TIMvision app that features simplified navigation and new discovery features.

It comes with a narrow remote that has a microphone for voices commands, D-Pad, and a full number pad to easily access digital television. Ports include Ethernet, Optical Digital Output, TV input, HDMI, USB, and micro SD card, as well as 5GHz 802.11ac Wi-Fi. The two latter ports make the device a rather useful media player for watching one’s own files.

A launch promotion means that TIM Smart customers can get the box for 2€ per month. At this time, it is only available in Italy.
