Google says that it has no current plans for Fiber in New York City

Earlier this week, a job listing emerged regarding Google Fiber in New York City. This led many people to speculate that Google was working to launch its fiber network in the Big Apple. Fiber rollouts have been sparse so far, with the service only hitting a few markets, including Austin and Kansas City, so the idea of it launching in a city as massive as New York was certainly surprising. Although the company did recently announce a larger-scale rollout to nine new metro areas.

Unfortunately, Google has now come out and addressed the rumors that Fiber is coming to New York. In a statement to Ars Technica, the company said that it has no plans to bring Fiber to New York City and told us not to “read into” the job listing. The job listing is purely looking for people to work in the New York City offices on the Fiber team.

“Don’t read into the job listing,” a Google spokesperson told Ars. “We’ve had a full team of folks working on Fiber in the New York office (and other locations around the world) for years. We don’t currently have any plans to bring Google Fiber to New York. We’re entirely focused on building out our networks in Kansas City, Austin, and Provo, and on exploring the possibility of bringing Fiber to the 34 locations we announced in February.”

The job listing is for a regional sales manager position, whose tasks will include building a team of employes to reach out to apartment and condo owners and pitch them on how Fiber Solutions would make their work more productive. Google also has job listings for the same position in Mountain View, California and Austin, Texas.

Google is currently hiring at an incredible rate for its Fiber team, with more than 60 positions being listed as open right now. Taking that into account, it certainly looks like Google is looking to beef up its Fiber rollout. Just not to New York City. Yet.
