Today, genetics research firm Illumina announced that Google Senior VP Jeff Huber of the search giant’s Google X lab has been appointed to its board of directors. After a year with eBay, Huber joined Google in 2003 and has worked on several different platforms like Maps, apps and ads.

“We are pleased to welcome Jeff to the Illumina Board and to leverage his expertise as we work to make genomic data accessible to the widest possible community of researchers and clinicians,” said Jay Flatley, Illumina’s CEO in a press release. “As a pioneer in big data analytics and highly scalable informatics, Jeff’s perspective will greatly benefit our efforts to harness massive amounts of genomic data to accelerate the discovery of new associations between the human genome and disease.”

In response to today’s announcement, Huber took to Twitter saying he was excited by Illumina’s work and personalized medicine. Not a complete stranger to medical tech, Google X has been dveloping on smart contacts lens that can monitor glucose levels in diabetic users.
