After expanding to Australia and New Zealand earlier this month, YouTube Red is releasing new TV shows for subscribers today. Unlike competing efforts from Netflix and Amazon, YouTube is leveraging the strength of popular Creators and their fanbases to drive monthly subscriptions.
Two scripted comedy shows are premiering today on YouTube Red. Bad Internet by College Humor is a 10 episode series that tells the story of a dystopian future where society is divided into groups as dictated by a Buzzfeed quiz. The 12 minute episodes are released weekly and the first episode is available to watch for free now.
The second series is a show within a show that takes a behind-the-scenes look at a singing competition. Created by Fine Brothers Entertainment, Sing It! also has 10 episodes and is twice as long at 24 minutes. The first episode is also available to watch for free.
Both shows are made by channels that have over 10 million subscribers and billions of views. In addition to using personalities famous from the channel, both series feature numerous famous YouTube creators. New episodes air weekly starting on May 25.
At $9.99 a month, Red is get a good deal for an ad-free YouTube experience, background videos, and complimentary Google Play Music subscription. The original content is just a nice bonus.
