Google previews expansion of Accelerated Mobile Pages across search results

Google today launched a preview of Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) in search results, meaning the mobile optimized pages appear in more places than just the “Top stories” section they were previously limited to.

In the preview, Google is showing off the AMP stories across the entire search results page and notes that it now has “150 million AMP docs… with over 4 million new ones being added every week.” If you’re unfamiliar with the mobile optimized pages, you can view the AMP version of this article here.

Google will now indicate AMP articles with a small icon for all search results, but it notes that the expansion for AMP won’t include a ranking change for sites:

To clarify, this is not a ranking change for sites. As a result of the growth of AMP beyond publishers, we wanted to make it easier for people to access this faster experience. The preview shows an experience where web results that that have AMP versions are labeled with The AMP Logo. When you tap on these results, you will be directed to the corresponding AMP page within the AMP viewer.

Google first announced its work with the Accelerated Mobile Pages Project last year and it implemented the speedier mobile versions of webpages in the “Top Stories” section of search results back in February. It later added AMP stories to its Google News Android app and its Google app on iOS

You can try out the preview by navigating to g.co/ampdemo and running a search.
