Google this week invited K-12 students in the US to create a Doodle for its Search homepage. For 2024, the Doodle for Google theme is “My wish for the next 25 years.”
This year’s theme is inspired by Google’s 25th birthday, which the company marked in September. Of note is support for expanded formats. In addition to Paint & Draw (canvas, paper, or tablet), there’s:
- Film & Stop Motion: Make your Doodle move
- VR Painting: Paint your Doodle in a new dimension
- Sculpt & Build: Get crafty and hands-on to build a 3D Doodle
Also added in 2024 is four new award categories:
- Planet Award: For a Doodle that honors the planet and focuses on sustainability
- Good Neighbor Award: For the Doodle that dreams big and centers its wish around local community
- Imagination Award: For the out-of-this world mind blowing Doodle
- Biggest Smile Award: For the most contagiously funny and playful Doodle
Google will select works from “fifty-five students across the 50 U.S. states, Puerto Rico, U.S. territories and freely associated states, The District of Columbia, and U.S. military bases.”
From those 55 State and Territory winners (who will get Google hardware as a prize), five National Finalists will be selected. They will receive a $5,000 college scholarship, Google hardware, and “Fun Google swag.”
One National Winner: For a period of two weeks, the 50 U.S. states, Puerto Rico, U.S. territories and freely associated states, The District of Columbia, and U.S. military bases will vote for their favorite Doodle from the 55 State and Territory Winners. These votes will help determine the National Winner.
In terms of prizes, the National Winner will have their Doodle displayed for 24 hours and:
- A $55,000 college scholarship [from $30,000]
- A $50,000 supplies and tech package for their school or non-profit organization
- A package of Google hardware and fun swag
- An individual and school trophy
Doodle for Google 2024 submissions are accepted until March 14, while Google will announce the National Winner in June.
