Google TV is broadcasting the best solar eclipse locations for free

The great solar eclipse of 2024 has quickly become a massive event, with likely millions traveling to the best viewing spots. However, even if you don’t plan on travelling, Google TV is offering a way to see the total solar eclipse from those best spots for free.

Google TV has become one of the strongest TV operating systems on the market. It took a lot of cues from its little brother, Android TV, and ran with them. In its current form, Google TV offers the ability to view live broadcasts from a native section in the OS without needing an additional app. Of course, if you have YouTube TV or other broadcasting apps, those will appear in the Live tab as well, which furthers app integration and makes the OS what it is.

Google today announced that Google TV will offer coverage of the 2024 solar eclipse in North America. According to Google, those live broadcasts will be available in Google TV for free on April 8. The idea is to provide access to several different channels that showcase different phases of the solar eclipse. This is done by showing live broadcasts from different cities along the totality strip across the US.

Here are some of the channels Google TV will be providing access to:

  • NBC News Now
  • Scripps News
  • Reuters Now
  • NBC Dallas Fort Worth
  • NBC Washington DC
  • NBC San Diego
  • NBC Los Angeles
  • NBC Philadelphia
  • NBC New York
  • NBC Connecticut
  • NBC South Florida
  • NBC Boston
  • NBC Bay Area
  • NBC Chicago
  • AccuWeather NOW

Each channel will be available in the For You tab in Google TV. They’ll have custom cards that link to each other, so users can hop between vantage points as the moon’s shadow makes its way across the region.
