Google drops ‘experimental’ status for NotebookLM

Google is continuing to build on the viral success of NotebookLM with a handful of updates today. With millions of users to date, Google’s NotebookLM is losing the “experimental” status/badge in the top-left corner.

NotebookLM also now has a logo in the shape of a lower-case ‘n.’

Audio Overviews now play in the background as you continue to use NotebookLM to query sources, get citations, etc.

Meanwhile, you can now guide and provide instructions on how Audio Overviews are generated with a new “Customize” button. This includes specifying the expertise level or noting what topics to focus on.

Google amusingly describes it as “slipping the AI hosts a quick note right before they go on the air, which will change how they cover your material.”

Last month, NotebookLM gained the ability to use uploaded audio and YouTube videos as sources.

Finally, Google today announced a paid version called “NotebookLM Business” for businesses and universities that has “enhanced features.” It comes as over 80,000 organizations are already using the tool, with Google Workspace admins able to enable the free version of NotebookLM for their companies.

NotebookLM Business is launching “later this year.” Google hasn’t shared how much this will cost, but companies can now apply for a pilot program with “early access to product features, training, and email support.”
