A handy tweak to the Google TV homescreen shows app update progress as an update is ongoing.
The Google TV homescreen shows your apps across a row, with updates to those apps generally being delivered in the background in a way that you’ll never notice. However, on the rare occasions where you do end up trying to use an app while it’s being updated, the homescreen will show a progress ring around the app icon.
When an app is being updated through the Play Store, whether that update is delivered automatically or was triggered manually, Google TV will show a progress ring around the app icon.
This is the same behavior in place on Android devices (varying depending on the homescreen launcher app).
We’re not sure when Google made this change, however. This behavior wasn’t in place prior to the homescreen redesign which added circular app icons, but we can’t be certain whether or not it was available at the time – at the very least, it’s something we’ve never noticed until recently. It’s worked across all devices we’ve tested, including Google TV Streamer and a Hisense U7N.
