This is it! After 16 Android apps duked it out in a single-elimination tournament, it’s time to determine the best Google four-color icon.
The semifinal races were very close.
1.) Google Maps vs. 4.) Chrome
The Google Maps pin beat the Google Photos pinwheel, which arguably is on the abstract side. Photos was initially winning, with positions flipping several times. Towards the end, Maps secured the lead. In earlier rounds, Google Maps defeated Chat and Drive, with no Workspace apps making it to the semifinals.
Meanwhile, Chrome barely triumphed over Google Wallet. The browser was leading from the start, but the margin narrowed significantly and it ended up being a pretty close race in what would have been an upset. None of the rectangles and squares made it, with (fairly) unique shapes winning out. Chrome beating the Gmail ‘M’ was surprising, but the earlier victory over Authenticator was pretty straightforward.
The final matchup isn’t particularly unexpected in hindsight. These are Google’s biggest services, with very high cross-platform and just day-to-day usage. Both have over 10 billion downloads on the Play Store. They are dock-worthy apps for most people.
When voting for the “best” Google app icon, factor originality, uniqueness, and obviousness.
