Samsung is betting bigger on iPhone-like ‘Wide Fold’ than it is on Galaxy Z TriFold

Samsung is reportedly planning to produce 1 million units of its upcoming “Wide Fold” device that emulates the rumored iPhone Fold, overshadowing the Galaxy Z TriFold’s limited run of around 200,000 units.

The Galaxy Z TriFold was never meant to be a staple for Samsung. Instead, it’s a concept gone mainstream that challenges the industry. While it’s an incredible device, it’s expensive and unwieldy, making for an incredible run in limited quantities.

Samsung is putting no such limits on its “Wide Fold” device. This working title refers to a foldable that brings a 4:3 screen ratio into the picture, unlike the smaller 2:1 foldables we’re used to seeing now. It just so happens Apple’s rumored iPhone foldable is going to come in a similar form.

According to a report from ETNews, Samsung has informed partners that it plans on producing 1 million units of the “Wide Fold” device.

That number overshadows any previous offshoot foldables Samsung has produced in the last few years. The number towers over the Galaxy Z TriFold, which reportedly is only going to see a run of around 200,000 units. That device officially launches on January 30, at $2,899.

There’s no telling what Samsung’s “Wide Fold” would cost. In fact, there’s very little else known about the phone other than its general size. That production number suggests Samsung is confident in the form factor and predicted reception. There are even rumors that Samsung plans to release the device alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Flip 8 at Unpacked later this year.
