For all of the praise heaped onto Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 7 last summer, its clamshell sibling felt a little bit like an afterthought. The company did make some meaningful changes to its hardware, slimming the chassis down by over a millimeter while adding in a larger battery and expanding its cover display to fill the entire panel. While plenty of us have held out hope that this year’s Flip 8 would see the sort of transformation Samsung delivered to its book-style foldable, it’s not sounding too promising so far.
Today’s leak comes courtesy of Galaxy Club, which updated its Galaxy Z Flip 8 coverage today to include some basic information about its battery capacities. According to this report, Samsung plans to once again pack two cells into its clamshell: one with a 1,150mAh capacity, one with a 3,024mAh capacity. That adds up to 4,174mAh, the same rating currently utilized by the Flip 7. With Samsung’s most recent clamshell advertising itself with a typical battery capacity of 4,300mAh, expect to see that same number appear at the company’s next Unpacked event expected to be held this summer.
That’s a break in the track record for the Flip series, which has slowly seen its battery size increase with nearly every generation. The Galaxy Z Flip 3, for example, shipped with a paltry 3,300mAh capacity, which was improved to 3,700mAh on the Flip 4. After taking a cycle off to focus on its new cover display, the Flip 6 once again returned with a larger 4,000mAh battery, overtaken last year by the Flip 7’s — and, if this leak is correct, the Flip 8’s — 4,300mAh rating. It’s possible this pattern returns with next year’s Flip 9, but I doubt that’s much comfort for anyone who was hoping to upgrade to a new clamshell this year.
There might be one bright spot here, however, and that’s size. One early rumor from last fall pegged the Galaxy Z Flip 8 with a 10% reduction in both size and weight, which would point to a 12.33mm build when closed paired with a weight of just 169 grams. If that’s true, the lack of a battery upgrade is a lot easier to excuse, just as it was easy to ignore the repeated battery capacity back with the Flip 5.
Other rumors, unfortunately, aren’t quite as exciting; the Flip 8 might stick to Exynos in all regions, while Galaxy Club‘s previous reporting suggest yet another upgrade cycle without any hardware changes to its two camera sensors. Hey, at least foldable fans have good company.
