Samsung has announced its Galaxy SmartTag 3 as a new AirTag rival with an updated design, longer battery life, and support for iPhone users.
In a press release today, Samsung unveiled the Galaxy SmartTag 3 as a “smaller, lighter” tracker. Specifically, it’s 35% smaller and 33% lighter. It shrinks down by ditching the built-in mounting loop, instead relying on add-on cases and accessories to connect to other objects. Samsung says the tracker has 550 days of battery life in typical use and up to 790 in “Power Saving Mode,” while also supporting both Bluetooth 6.0 with channel sounding and UWB for precise finding.
Galaxy SmartTag 3 integrates with the Galaxy Find Network which is available on Galaxy smartphones and usable through the SmartThings Find app. Samsung touts over 900 million Galaxy devices building out the network.
New this time around, too, is support for tracking down a SmartTag 3 via iPhone. Samsung’s app on iPhone supports finding the tracker, though it doesn’t contribute to the network. Still rather handy for families with multiple types of devices.
While iPhone support has been added, Samsung’s new tracker still doesn’t integrate with the wider Android Find Hub network which works across all Android devices rather than only Galaxy.
Other new features include:
- Place Notification… adds a proactive layer, letting users define an area and receive an alert when a tagged item moves in or out of it.
- Location History lets users review where their tag has been
- Movement Detection Alert can notify them when movement is detected so they can stay informed without actively checking.
- NFC-powered Lost Mode, which can display registered contact information or a short message when a lost tag is scanned with a compatible mobile device.
- SmartThings IoT Control, which allows users to trigger preset routines for compatible connected devices using the tag button.
- Left Behind Alert, which can notify users when their mobile device loses connection with a tagged belonging.
The Galaxy SmartTag 3 will be available on October 7, the same date as Samsung’s new Galaxy Tab S12 series.
