YouTube gets new custom blurring tool to blur moving objects & anything else in videos

YouTube announced a new blurring tool for creators today that lets them apply custom blurring effects to any objects in their videos. The new functionality is an enhancement of the face blurring feature that YouTube has had for a few years now.

The new feature allows blurring effects to be applied to any object in a video, including moving objects like Google shows in the example below. It can also be resized and set to start and stop at certain points in the video, and a “lock” function will let you use the blur on anything in the video that isn’t moving.

Whether you want to blur sensitive information such as a license plate or cover up a wardrobe malfunction without reshooting an entire scene, the new Custom Blurring tool will let you blur objects throughout your video, right within YouTube… The Custom Blurring tool will automatically blur that object as it moves throughout the video, using our new innovative technology that can analyze the motion of any video on the fly.

The feature for now is only accessible for YouTube on the desktop. You’ll find it under Blurring effects tab > Custom blurring > Edit within the Enhancements tools in the video editor/uploader. And YouTube has more detailed instructions on using the new feature in a new support doc here.
