Google TV adds more free channels in time for the holidays – over 170 now available

After crossing 150 free channels available to users earlier this year, Google TV is closing out the year with another handful of additions, many of which are right in time for the holidays.

Google TV Freeplay makes it possible for users to immediately start streaming completely free (ad-supported) live streaming channels when they get a new Google TV device. At least in the US, that is, as these channels aren’t available in other regions. Google started with around 80 channels when this feature first launched, but has been building out the library rapidly.

Over the course of 2024, Google has added around 50 or so new channels, with the total sitting just shy of 160 as of November.

Now, there are even more channels being added, as Google has released over a dozen more channels for Freeplay. The first two channels listed below were added in November, but the rest have been added within the past week or so.

  • Designated Survivor
  • Places & Spaces – The Great Christmas Light Fight
  • Best of Dr Phil
  • Xumo Free Holiday Movie Channel
  • Xumo Free Holiday Classics
  • Xumo Christian Christmas
  • Continuum
  • Z Nation
  • The Design Network
  • Filmrise: Classic TV
  • UFC
  • Unbeaten
  • Big 12 Studios
  • Waypoint TV
  • PursuitUP

Some Stingray music channels have also been temporarily been updated for the holidays.

  • Stingray Greatest Holiday Hits
  • Stingray Soul Storm Christmas
  • Stingray Hot Country Christmas

We suspect that the holiday channels may be temporary, but as it stands today there are 171 total channels available for free on Google TV Freeplay.

However, this also comes as Google TV has removed one channel from its collection of car-focused channels

  • Motortrend Fast TV

Outside of Freeplay, there are now over 1,100 free channels available when you include Google’s partners in Plex, PlutoTV, and others, but those channels do require additional app downloads.

Meanwhile, the revamped Freeplay app for Google TV remains missing on many devices, after the update was rolled back from most devices (excluding the Google TV Streamer) due to a crashing issue as we first reported in early November.
