Galaxy Z Fold 8 ‘Wide’ fixes another foldable problem as more specs & photos leak [Gallery]

Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 8, the wider one, continues to shape up to be a great addition to the lineup, with a new leak revealing that it fixes another problem with foldables – weight.

Leaker Ice Universe took to Twitter/X this week with several tidbits about Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 8 series, the most interesting of which is the weight of the wide Galaxy Z Fold 8. Apparently, the passport-shaped foldable will weigh in at a mere 201g. That’s lighter than the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and even many traditional smartphones – Google’s Pixel 10 Pro XL weighs in at 232g, for example.

Weight has been a key issue for foldables for quite some time. The added weight of an entire second display, all of the mechanical aspects of the hinge, and more all make it tough to keep these devices lightweight. The original Galaxy Fold maxed out at 273g, and Google’s first Pixel Fold was 283g. Those were both around 50% heavier than the heaviest traditional smartphones at the time and, ultimately, that makes the device a little less nice to use in day-to-day life, so it’s great that Samsung has not only come a long way in this regard, but has also continued to push the weight down.

The “Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra,” meanwhile, would stick with the same 215g weight as Fold 7, but that’s with a bigger 5,000 mAh battery under the hood. Ice says that the “Ultra” is also getting 45W charging and a slight thickness reduction when the device is open, but is otherwise mostly unchanged from Fold 7.

The device we previously knew as “Wide” will also apparently get a “new” 50MP camera sensor that natively supports a 24MP output mode. Samsung usually outputs images at 12MP.

Rounding out these latest leaks, some more images of Fold 8 series dummy units were shared, showing the “Wide” next to the “Ultra” in its folded state.

Samsung is expected to launch the Galaxy Z Fold 8 series on July 22.
