Chrome OS 53 hits stable channel w/ Material overview mode, Android apps not yet available

After rolling out to Mac, Windows, and Linux last week, Chrome OS 53 has just hit the stable channel with a Material redesign of the overview mode. While Android apps were expected to arrive with version 53, the feature has been delayed for the three Chromebooks that already have the Play Store.

Google has announced a number of upcoming changes to Chrome in the past few weeks, including phasing out Chrome apps on the browser and defaulting to HTML5 by year’s end. Chrome 53 — rolling out now to Mac, Windows, and Linux — contains the usual bug and security fixes, but also brings Material Design to Windows.
