Google-related movie ‘The Internship’ with Vince Vaughn spotted filming in Atlanta [Gallery]

An interesting post appeared on Reddit today about an upcoming movie on two 40-something interns trying to become successful at an Internet company, but, more intriguingly, the film’s plot supposedly has Google ties.

The Reddit poster claimed his college transformed into a “Vince Vaughn/Owen Wilson movie called ‘The Internship’ where they play Google interns.” A quick glimpse at the comments revealed the picture is shooting at Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Ga.

According to the college’s website, set preparations for the movie will begin this week, “with production scheduled to wrap up on Aug. 24.” Adam Carlson of Creative Loafing, an Atlanta-based entertainment blog, reported earlier this month that he also spotted the film crew in town with Google:

• As it turns out, I showed up as the crew was beginning prep on an outdoor sequence across the street from the Studios, which would include both a fire hydrant specially painted red and a Google bus.
• The scenes indoors probably had a Google connection, too, […] a Coke machine had been installed on a top floor with a Google banner across it, covering the logo.
• Maybe Owen and Vince — who play out-of-work salesmen reinventing themselves with a tech firm internship — were meant to be at Google? No one would confirm, but the very humid, very Atlanta weather didn’t feel much like California.

Entertainment Weekly further weighed in with a report from yesterday about comedian and actor Eric Andre joining the film, which it dubbed a comedy:

• He’ll play Sid, an engineer at a technology conglomerate who oversees Wilson and Vaughn’s characters, unemployed analog guys who try to reboot their careers as lowly interns at the Silicon Valley company, even though they know nothing about technology.
• ‘He’s always getting crapped on by his superior,’ Andre, 29, says of his character. ‘I don’t know if you’ve ever met an engineer, but they’re all super introverted, nerdy guys. My friend works at Google — he has a joke: ‘How can you tell if you’re talking to an extroverted engineer? They’re staring at your shoes when they’re talking to you.’ Bad-dum-dum!'”
• Director Shawn Levy (Real Steel, Date Night) began shooting the comedy earlier this month from Vaughn’s screenplay.

Vaughn sat down with the Huffington Post yesterday to talk about the upcoming flick, as well:

• HP: I feel like your career’s taken a tamer turn in recent years — you’ve even done a few Christmas movies. Can you talk about that a little bit?
• Vaughn: Well, I’m back to doing a lot of R-rated movies now. I didn’t want to repeat myself too much. I’d done “Old School” and “Wedding Crashers” … really, I guess, starting with “Swingers.” But the movie I have coming out now, “The Watch,” starring Jonah Hill, Ben Stiller, and Richard Ayoade … [is] a really fun movie. It’s rated R. And then I’m working with Owen Wilson on a movie called “The Internship” where Owen and I lose our jobs and become interns at Google. We get free food, we get to play ping pong and take naps … We find a way to get into the intern program and try to get a job there. It’s fun to go back and do some R-rated comedies again. I feel like as you get older, the roles you get change, and you don’t always want to do the same tone over and over again. What’s been really fun about this TV show is how edgy it is. It’s really reflective of our group of friends. You have guys of a bunch of different nationalities who are all friends, and I think in the comedy world, that’s always kind of been the case. In real life, everyone kind of teases and picks on each other. There’s always a real friendship here. And it’s fun to have this bar setting where everyone’s so diverse, and to joke and tease each other. You can tell there’s a real friendship and authenticity as a result of it.

Last, but not least, IMDb provides a few details on “The Internship.” According to the unofficial resume for all things Hollywood, Vaughn indeed wrote the screenplay. Director Shawn Levy is also signed-on, while Vaughn, Owen Wilson, and Rose Byrne take up the top three roles. Oh, and 21 Laps Entertainment, Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation, and Wild West Picture Show Productions are just a few of the production houses on board.

The film’s synopsis follows:

Two recently laid-off men in their forties, try to make it as interns at a successful Internet company where their managers are in their twenties.

“The Internship” is shooting now, obviously, but IMDb expects a June 2013 premiere. It is currently unknown how involved —if at all— Google is with the project.
