Google’s Chromebook might be busy trying to hammer the final nail in the netbook’s coffin, however the search giant’s Chrome OS platform will soon receive a little competition from a familiar operating system. Today, Archos announced its new ArcBook, a $170 touchscreen netbook powered by Android.
For less than the price of most tablets, you’ll get a 10.1-inch 1,200 x 600 display, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage, a dual-core ARM Cortex A9 clocked at 1.2GHz and a stale taste of Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. As for the ArcBook’s netbook-like qualities, there’s a “full-fledged” physical keyboard, a full size USB 2.0 port and a chunky 8,000mAh battery capable of producing over 10 hours of power.
If the aforementioned specs sound appealing, prepare to have your socks knocked off! As a bonus, Archos is tossing in a pre-loaded copy of OfficeSuitePro 6 and 15GB of Google Drive storage (presumably for a limited time).
Not the most conventional setup, the ArcBook might appeal to hardcore Android enthusiasts looking for something close to tinker with. However, we doubt that its June release will stop Chrome OS from swinging its hammer.
