Sketchy rumor has Samsung releasing Galaxy S6 Plus, a larger-screened S6 Edge

According to Italian HDBlog via SamMobile, Samsung is planning on launching what is essentially a larger Galaxy S6 Edge and will call it the Galaxy S6 Plus. The device is apparently codenamed Project Zero 2. The South Korean electronics giant is expected to release the new phone in the coming weeks before IFA 2015 where it is still plans to release the Galaxy Note 5, which is being called Project Noble inside the company.

Before going into details bear in mind that we are unable to confirm the report, and that no other outlets reporting on the rumored S6 Plus have corroborated what HDBlog is saying either. If true, though, it may prove correct research firm Gartner’s recent analysis that Apple’s iPhone 6 Plus is a major factor in the Cupertino company’s encroachment on Samsung’s worldwide sales. The S6 Plus is rumored to have either a 5.4-inch or 5.5-inch display size, which is only .2-.3 inches smaller than the currently available Galaxy Note 4.

Beyond the screen size, however, the S6 Edge diverges from the Note lineup namely with its dual-edge curved display and lack of S Pen functionality. So the Note 5, which as we said is still expected for an IFA 2015 debut in September, would continue to be pushed as a prosumer version of Samsung’s flagship smartphone but with some extra bells and whistles like the S Pen for taking notes on the screen from anywhere in the phone. It definitely would blur the lines among Samsung’s lineup, though.

In terms of other specs, HDBlog is reporting that the S6 Plus will sport 32GB of internal storage (not expandable, but neither are the S6 or S6 Edge), a hexa-core Snapdragon 808 processor, a 5-megapixel front and a 16-megapixel rear camera. The Note 5, on the other hand, is rumored to have a 2K or 4K Super AMOLED flat display, an octa-core Exynos 7422 processor and the S Pen.

Earlier this year it was reported that Samsung was seeing better than expected sales of the Galaxy S6 Edge, so perhaps the company is looking to ride that wave with yet another variant of the device. But who knows! As we alluded to, this rumor still looks a bit sketchy to us. We’ll keep you updated, though.
