Casio’s rugged Android Wear Smart Outdoor Watch to be available March 25 for $500

At this year’s CES, Casio kicked off the trend of rugged smartwatches running Android Wear. Unlike other gadgets announced at CES, the Smart Outdoor Watch WSD-F10 will be available starting next week from multiple retailers for $500.

The watch is heavily geared towards hikers, fishers, and other people in the wild who want to remain connected and see their latest notifications, but do not want to risk damaging their smartphones in the process.

To get around the problem of wearing around a battery-drained device at the end of the day, the WSD-F10 has a dual-layered display that can switch between a color LCD and monochromatic screen. In the latter time-only mode, the device is rated for up to a month of battery life, while the regular 1.32-inch display will get a normal full day of battery life.

The WSD-F10 has 50 meter water resistance and claims to be the first watch that achieves this while having a built-in microphone. It is compliant with a MIL-STD-810G military standard that ensures it can withstand drops, vibrations, various altitudes, extreme temperatures, and the freezing rain.

There are various sensors in the device, including a built-in pressure sensor, compass, and accelerometer, that can be accessed from one of the many shortcut buttons found on the watch’s sides. Other customizations include custom watch faces from Casio that show altitude, direction, barometric pressure, and other sensor readings.

The watch will be available starting on March 25 from Amazon, Google Store, REI, and Casio’s online store for $500. Users can choose between green, orange, black, and red models.
