Google Drive will now send alert notifications on the web in Chrome

In the past, the primary way of interacting with Google Drive notifications was through email. It was only recently that Drive on Android and iOS begin sending alert notifications. Starting today, Google Drive will also send out notifications on the web in Chrome.

Specifically, users will get a notification when a Drive file is shared with them or when someone requests access. In the latter case, tapping on a notification will bring up an already filled in share menu to quickly grant access. In the next few days, the Drive website will show a dialogue box in bottom left corner to turn on notifications.

In settings, users will be able to turn on/off notifications for shared items and requests for access. The feature must be turned on individually for every device and settings are not synced across.

The biggest caveat of the feature is that it only works in Chrome. Like offline access and editing, many Drive features are limited to Google’s browser. Notifications will fully roll out to all Drive users over the next few days. Announced last week, the ability to save individual files for offline access is now fully rolled out.
