Sony Xperia X and XA pre-orders go live in the UK

Following their unveiling at MWC earlier this year, we finally have an expected release date and price for both the Xperia X and Xperia XA from Sony. Both devices have been made available to pre-order on Amazon and, as you’d expect from Sony, both seem a little pricey compared to other similarly specced smartphones…

The Xperia XA has an eye-catching design with an almost edge-to-edge 5-inch 720p display. The Android 6.0.1-loaded device is powered by the octa-core MediaTek Helio P10 processor, has 2GB RAM and 16GB of internal storage which can be expanded via MicroSD. The rear camera boasts 13 million pixels, while the front snapper has an 8MP sensor. The black model will set you back £279 ($399 USD), but you can pre-order the lime gold or white model for £239 ($342). It’s worth noting that if you do pre-order from Amazon, shipment isn’t expected until June 10th.

Sony’s more high-end device, the Xperia X (which the company confirmed is replacing the Z lineup), costs almost twice as much despite featuring a mid-range Snapdragon 650 processor and a 1080p display. Other specs include 3GB RAM and 32GB storage as well as a hybrid autofocus-equipped 23MP camera on the back. The Xperia X can be pre-ordered for £499 ($714) with an expected ship date of May 20th. For reference, that price puts it at £130 more than the Moto X Style, and £50 more than a Nexus 6P. Both of which have flagship displays and processors.

While the XA doesn’t seem like a terrible choice, especially not at £239, we’d urge you to reconsider spending £500 on a phone which clearly isn’t close to competing with other high end devices. Even if you’re the most devout Sony fan, the Xperia Z5 is a much better device and costs more than £100 less.

There’s no word on when the new Xperias will make their way to the US, but given Sony’s historical lack of urgency to get devices in to the States, we don’t think they’ll be available there anytime soon, if at all.
