According to new data from Strategy Analytics, Samsung’s dominance in the mobile market has continued to rise this year. The data shows that the company’s Galaxy S7 Edge was the world’s top-selling Android device during the first half of 2016, with estimated shipments of 13.3 million units.
As a whole, Android shipments rose 5 percent annually during the first half of 2016, rising from 552.2 million in the same time last year to 577.3 million this year. Apple, on the other hand, saw shipments fall 16 percent annually from 108.7 million to 91.6 million.
Samsung devices overall accounted for the top three most popular Android devices during the first half of 2016. The Galaxy S7 Edge came in on top with 13.3 million shipments, while the Galaxy J2 saw shipments of 13 million and the Galaxy S7 saw shipments of 11.8 million units. The firm notes, however, that smaller companies like Huawei, Oppo, and Vivo are continuing to gain on Samsung.
“We estimate the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge model shipped 13.3 million units and accounted for 2 percent share of all Android smartphones shipped worldwide in H1 2016. Samsung’s Galaxy S7 edge is currently the world’s most popular Android smartphone. The S7 edge is wildly popular in dozens of countries globally, due to its attractive curved hardware design blended with a sidebar of apps that consumers find easy to use.”
Last week, data from Strategy Analytics showed that Samsung was continuing to strengthen its hold on the smartphone market with shipments of 77.6 million during the second quarter of 2016, up from 71.9 million in the same quarter last year. Oppo, however, more than doubled its sales from 7.6 million units to 18 million.
The growth in shipments is also helping Samsung’s earnings, as you would expect. For Q2, the company reported its most profitable quarter in two years.
