BlackBerry DTEK60 goes official as the company’s most powerful Android smartphone to date

After leaking a few times over the past several weeks, BlackBerry has made the DTEK60 official today as its most powerful Android device so far and its first with a fingerprint sensor.

The DTEK60 brings a 5.5-inch Quad HD display, Snapdragon 820 processor, 4GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, a 3,000 mAh battery, and a 21MP rear camera all for $499. Like the previous BlackBerry DTEK50, the DTEK60 puts an emphasis on security with BlackBerry’s included apps and various other enhancements such as a secure bootloader, Hardware Root of Trust, and the DTEK app.

Out of the box, the DTEK60 runs on top of Android Marshmallow, but the company says it is working with Google to upgrade to Nougat soon. BlackBerry also has a great track record for security updates and promises the same on this device. The company’s suite of apps will be pre-loaded on the device, including: BlackBerry Hub, Calendar, and the company’s keyboard.

The design of the DTEK60 is based on a TCL reference design, similar to the DTEK50, and not unlike the Alcatel IDOL 4S with front facing speakers, customizable “Convenience Key,” and the rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. Just like the 4S, this device brings a metal frame and dual-glass design. And you’ll also find USB C and support for Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0.

The DTEK60 goes on sale today for $499 primarily aimed at business and government users. Of course, consumers can still pick up the phone from BlackBerry’s website and presumably from other retailers soon.
