A new series of reports today from SamMobile, a blog that often provides accurate details on unreleased Samsung products, claims that the company plans to ditch both the 3.5mm headphone jack and the physical Home button on its upcoming Galaxy S8 smartphone. The reports also confirm new details about the device’s display and other specs.
The removal of the headphone jack will notably follow Apple’s somewhat controversial move back in September when it became one of the first major phone manufacturers to remove the legacy audio port from its flagship iPhone 7.
Back in September a rumor claimed that Samsung could possibly ditch the headphone jack as it was also apparently working on its own proprietary port to replace it. While the reports today from SamMobile confirmed the removal of the 3.5mm headphone jack, the fate of a proprietary port is unclear as a separate report from the blog confirms the S8 will indeed feature a USB Type-C port like the Note 7.
The removal of the Home button, however, is something that other Android manufacturers and Apple are said to be considering for upcoming devices. The report also offers up details on the device’s screen resolution, which will apparently remain at a 2K 2560×1440 resolution. With the removal of the Home button, Samsung is expected to embed an optical fingerprint sensor of sorts into the device’s display.
Samsung is expected to unveil the device in February at Mobile World Congress. Check out our earlier Galaxy S8 rumor roundup here.
