MediaTek’s latest chipsets are now ‘optimized’ for Gemini Nano

Google debuted Gemini Nano last year as its on-device AI model, but it was only supported by select devices. It may soon expand to more, though, as MediaTek has announced that some of its chips are now “optimized” for Gemini Nano.

In a press release this week, MediaTek has revealed that its currently flagship chip, the Dimensity 9300, as well as the step-down Dimensity 8300 are both now “optimized” for Gemini Nano support.

MediaTek explains:

As part of our ongoing investment in creating ecosystems necessary to ensure a strong future for AI, MediaTek and Google have worked together to successfully integrate and optimize Gemini Nano, Google’s Large Language Model (LLM) designed to bring on-device Generative AI to smartphones, so it can run effectively and efficiently on the MediaTek Dimensity 9300 and 8300 chipsets. This effort includes collaboration with Google using MediaTek’s NeuroPilot toolkit and porting Gemini Nano to MediaTek APU to improve performance.

This won’t directly result in Gemini Nano being available on phones powered by these MediaTek chips, but it does mean that support will probably be a whole lot easier. MediaTek adds that an APK for developers and OEMs will soon be available to aid in “deploying Gemini Nano applications.”

Meanwhile, MediaTek has also announced that, at MWC 2024 next week, it will show off on-device generative AI using Llama 2 LLM. This will also be powered by Dimensity 9300 and 8300.
