In its latest update, password manager 1Password is adding support for passkeys on Android.
Passkeys are the next big thing in online security, promising to do away with traditional passwords for a more secure alternative. However, adoption has been reasonably slow in many areas. This week, though, one of the best password managers, 1Password, is rolling out passkey support on Android.
Announced in a blog post, 1Password now supports passkeys on any device running Android 14 and higher. This allows 1Password to handle passkeys for other apps, and it works across multiple platforms. 1Password specifically calls out this cross-device support as an advantage over Google’s passkey manager, saying:
Google Password Manager is designed to work in three places only: Android, Chrome, and ChromeOS. 1Password, meanwhile, has thoughtfully-designed apps for every platform and supports every major web browser including Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Brave, and Safari.
1Password rolled out passkey support on Chrome last year.
Beyond just storing new passkeys, the app will also be able to convert existing logins to passkeys, but it requires compatible apps. A handful of key examples of this on Android include Amazon, Uber, and WhatsApp, but the catalog is growing.
