Report: T-Mobile and Verizon are effectively buying out US Cellular’s network

The cellular market in the US may be shrinking again, as Verizon and T-Mobile are reportedly aiming to buy out US Cellular.

US Cellular has never been one of the “big” providers in the US, but the carrier has operated its own network for some time and is by no means a small player. However, the carrier has also been slowly losing its subscribers over the past few years.

In a report from The Wall Street Journal, it’s revealed that T-Mobile and Verizon are both attempting to buy the network US Cellular runs.

T-Mobile is apparently “closing in” on a deal worth $2 billion which would take over some of US Cellular’s operations and spectrum licenses. Meanwhile, Verizon is also chasing a similar deal, but while the T-Mobile deal could close as soon as this month, Verizon’s deal is further out.

However, the 4,000+ towers that US Cellular owns are reportedly not part of either deal, as the wireless spectrum licenses are the main point of value.
