After revealing a new version of Project Starline a year ago, Google today announced that it’s bringing the immersive video conferencing technology “out of the lab” by partnering with HP.
The “magic window” makes use of 3D display technology and AI to make it look like a real person is in front of you. Google has said that Starline is an improvement over traditional video calling, with the result being “better attentiveness, memory recall and an overall sense of presence.” Specifically:
- “~30% boost in memory recall”
- “~15% increase in visual attentiveness”
- “Starline conversations contain up to 50% more nonverbal communication,” like subtle gestures, nods, and expressions
Google first showed off Starlike at I/O 2021 and last year greatly shrunk down the tech. Instead of a booth, the latest version is the size of a digital whiteboard with a depth guard and a fixed table. There are just a few “standard” cameras around the screen with AI leveraged to create a depth map.
In “partnering with HP to start commercialization” of Starline in 2025, Google cites “HP’s expertise in computing, combined with their investment in Poly’s collaboration solutions, makes them uniquely positioned to deliver new and innovative experiences worldwide.”
The focus is on “distributed teams and individuals in the workplace,” while Starline will work with Google Meet, Zoom, and other “video conferencing services you use today.” Google will share more details later this year.
