MediaTek is bringing Gemini Nano support to its processors, starting with the upcoming Dimensity 9400, which is set to launch soon.
Gemini Nano has slowly expanded over the last few months to more OEMs and developers. The multimode AI allows for Google’s Generative AI to act on a smaller scale throughout the Pixel series and other devices.
MediaTek announced today that the Dimensity 9400 would be optimized to support Gemini Nano “with new multimodal capabilities.” The announcement isn’t limited to the new SoC; rather, MediaTek notes that other “Generative AI-enabled chipsets” will be included as well.
Gemini Nano with Multimodality first debuted on the Pixel 9 series, powered by Google’s Tensor G4 chipset, where it is used for features such as Pixel Recorder. MediaTek’s announcement today marks the first expansion for the feature, though there’s no word on which devices will be supported.
Based on MediaTek’s wording, it sounds like Dimensity 9400 won’t be the only chip with support, either. This likely brings compatibility to devices that are running MediaTek’s existing chips and those that will come out in future years. For instance, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 series runs MediaTek’s 9300+ chipset, and it sounds like that chip and, in turn, that tablet might be able to support Gemini Nano with Multimodality in the future.
The company notes that the adoption of the multimodel model will allow for more exciting features, like creating detailed text descriptions of images captured on your phone.
More details are soon to come on MediaTek’s Dimensity 9400 SoC beyond Gemini Nano optimization, as the chip is set to debut this month. The company put a massive emphasis on AI last year, and it’s expected this year will not be much different.
