The Galaxy Z Fold 2 and Galaxy Tab A7 are no longer supported and will receive no further security updates or major Android upgrades.
Samsung has made improvements to its update policy over the years, with new devices coming with around seven years’ worth of updates. The Galaxy Z Fold 2 and Galaxy Tab A7 were both released before this initiative, only receiving somewhere around 4 years of updates.
Officially, Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 2 and Tab A7 have been dropped from the list of supported devices receiving updates. It’s not so much a surprise, considering the original Galaxy Fold was dropped not too long ago.
The news doesn’t mean that the Galaxy Z Fold 2 or Tab A7 will stop functioning. Rather, a device without security updates may eventually be exposed to malicious attacks or other threats. Considering how much we do on our phones online, it makes sense that Samsung would need to release constant security updates to ensure its phones are able to function without being a threat to the user.
If you’re considering an upgrade, it’s worth noting that the Galaxy Z Fold 2 is eligible for a $600 trade-in credit from Samsung when buying the newest model. Of course, that’s $600 off of a $1,900 phone. It would be cheaper to buy the Online Exclusive models, which are currently $750 off, and then sell the Z Fold 2 somewhere.
For those who are still using the Galaxy Z Fold 3, do note that it should receive five years of security updates. That means it shouldn’t lose support until sometime in 2026.
