Blackmagic Camera 1.4 adds support for Xperia, Oppo devices, Bluetooth mics, and more

The latest Blackmagic Camera 1.4 update is now rolling out for Android. The headline additions are support for several Sony Xperia and Oppo devices and Bluetooth mic connectivity.

Since its launch earlier this year, the third-party camera application has received numerous updates. Even after our full hands-on with version 1.1, the Blackmagic Camera application is already more robust and becoming a strong contender for the best camera application on Android.

The Blackmagic Camera 1.4 update was confirmed by the official Blackmagic account on Threads, with yet more Android phones now able to utilize the app. Sony Xperia 1, 5, and Pro-I hardware plus Oppo phones are now supported. However, Blackmagic does not specify which Oppo phones are able to use the app, just “compatible Oppo devices” which isn’t all that helpful. We’d wager you could install on most recent flagship Oppo phones and enjoy the camera application.

Other improvements include the ability to set the recording bitrate when using H.264 and H.265 codecs. This could be a huge feature for those that want to record to external devices such as SD cards and SSDs, as you can adjust the bitrate for better quality footage or drop to help save space.

What’s New for Blackmagic Camera for Android 1.4:
– Audio monitoring while recording.
– Support for bluetooth microphones.
– Support for Tentacle Sync for recording timecode sync.
– Recording bit rate options for H.264 and H.265 codecs.
– Support for compatible Oppo devices.
– Support Sony Xperia series 1, 5 and Pro-I devices.
– General performance and stability improvements.

Another big change in Blackmagic Camera 1.4 is the ability to use paried Bluetooth microphones like lavalier or lapel mics as audio sources within the application. Previously, this was limited to wired audio systems, but this means you can use other options and hopefully your in-ear earbuds as audio sources. To help with this, audio monitoring is also now available while recording.

The final major change is the addition of support for Tentacle Sync when using timecode sync. This Bluetooth tool syncs the in-camera audio with audio/external recorders. This might be useful on professional shoots but is of little use to hobbyists.

Blackmagic Camera 1.4 is already rolling out on the Google Play Store.
