Google Search gets a Squid Game easter egg

Season 2 of Squid Game was released on December 26 — in a choice, thematic decision — and Google Search is marking the occasion with an easter egg.

As Google tends to do during big pop culture moments, searching “squid game” on desktop and mobile shows the floating invitation card from the hit series. Tapping launches a fullscreen overlay of the “Red Light, Green Light” — which also works as a search term — game.

You have the option to disable sound in the bottom-right corner, but this straightforward mini game works better with it and you get the eerie soundtrack. There are Go and Stop buttons at the bottom of the screen that control six characters.

Like in the show, you have to move them forward when Younghee is not looking and stop when the creepily large robotic doll turns around. What happens when you get caught is drastically toned down compared to the series

Google Search’s Squid Game game is definitely a way to spend a few minutes this holiday season.

Squid Game Season 2 comes over three years after the first, with a final season coming in 2025. The post-Christmas release date is amusing, but it’s obviously great for binging the seven episodes.
