Google Pixel is finally gaining traction in India’s premium smartphone market, as the brand managed to grow while OnePlus took a nosedive.
India is one of the world’s largest smartphone markets, but the premium segment is still fairly small by comparison. According to a new report from Canalys, around 6.5 million premium smartphone shipments took place in India from Q1 2024 through Q3 2024. That’s up from 4.2 million the year before.
Through the figures in this report, we can see that OnePlus dropped considerably in the market, going from 21% to just 6% (of Android brands) in a year, while other BBK (OnePlus’ parent company) brands including Oppo and Vivo both saw notable growth. Samsung also saw a jump, which Canalys attributes to the Galaxy S24 series. Samsung holds around 30% of the total premium smartphone segment in India.
Google Pixel also saw noteworthy growth in India, jumping from a mere 1% in 2023 to 5% in 2024. This likely comes, to some extent, on the back of the Pixel 8 which is now manufactured (in part) in India which is a part of Google’s overall push to grow in the region. 2024 also saw considerable growth for Google outside of India, with 2024 including the highest-ever sales quarter for Pixel to date.
All the while, Apple continues to take up the bulk of the premium smartphone segment in India, with roughly 56% marketshare compared to the 44% shared by all Android brands.
