Google Keep updating FAB to bring back ‘single tap’ to create note

Back in November, Google redesigned Keep for Android to make note creation a two-step process. Google Keep is now readying a “Create text notes with a single tap” setting.

About APK Insight: In this “APK Insight” post, we’ve decompiled the latest version of an application that Google uploaded to the Play Store. When we decompile these files (called APKs, in the case of Android apps), we’re able to see various lines of code within that hint at possible future features. Keep in mind that Google may or may not ever ship these features, and our interpretation of what they are may be imperfect. We’ll try to enable those that are closer to being finished, however, to show you how they’ll look in case that they do ship. With that in mind, read on.

With the redesign, tapping the FAB reveals a menu with four chips: Text, List, Drawing, and Image. For me, this redesign greatly impacted years of muscle memory. An additional issue was how I’d tap the floating action button twice — thinking I missed the first time — only to close the menu.

Google Keep 5.25.014.03.90 reveals work on a new “Create text notes with a single tap” option that will appear as a toggle in settings alongside the other Display options.

Once enabled, tapping the FAB immediately opens a new text note for you to start typing. You can access the other note types from the ‘plus’ menu in the bottom-left corner. This is a good option to have that allows Google to retain the redesign.

We enabled it with version 5.25.014.x, which is not yet widely rolled out. An additionally server-side update will presumably be required.
