Google Drive showing a ludicrously capacious (Large) FAB for some

Material 3 offers three size options for the floating action button, with Google Drive for Android possibly adopting the Large FAB.

Material Design has a Small FAB, FAB, and Large FAB, with the middle option being the most commonly used one. First-party apps have increasingly been using the Small FAB above the regular one to launch a camera. Google Drive and Files by Google both use it as a scanning shortcut, while it’s for Gemini in Google Messages.

L-R: FAB, Small FAB, Large FAB

On some of our devices today, we’re seeing Google Drive switch to a large FAB for the ‘New’ menu (Folder, Upload, Scan, Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides). Meanwhile, the camera shortcut is the usual floating action button size. When you scroll the page, both entirely disappear.

Normally, Google Drive uses a rectangular Extended FAB that shrinks into the rounded square when you scroll down a list. The camera also goes away.

Hopefully, this is just a bug related to Google Drive choosing the wrong component size as it is a bit distracting, especially in the grid view.

We’re seeing this large FAB with version 2.25.060.0 of Google Drive for Android. Not all devices are impacted by whatever this is.
