YouTube on TVs adding music ‘Display’ with live lyrics, artwork

YouTube is improving the experience of listening to songs and watching music videos on TVs with Display options, like live lyrics.

When watching a music video, there’s a new “Display” button in-between Thumbs Down and Save. This will shrink the current window and let you “Choose what you want to appear on the screen while you’re playing music.”

Video is the option you’re using, while Lyrics will show that live scrolling text on the left. It’s similar to what’s available in YouTube Music. Finally, Artwork centers that square with a blurred color background, as well as song name and artist appearing underneath.

The Display options also appear in the player when you start a song (from the YouTube Music tab/homescreen app shortcut) to let you quickly switch to the music video version. What you set (Video, Lyrics, or Video) is persistent across songs/music videos in our brief testing.

This is a pretty nice leanback experience for listening to music on televisions.

We’re seeing this music Display with version 5.22+ of YouTube for Android TV, with users on other smart TV platforms also seeing it.
